Worked with binet (creator of the iq test) Administered iq tests to children and noticed different age groups made different kinds of mistakes and approach problems differently. He noticed that older children not only knew more, but approached problems differently. Constructivist theory: children play an active role in constructing their understanding of reality. Knowledge is a process, not a state. How children relate to, interact with, or understand the world. Structures are strategies that change systematically with development. Organization: integrate cognitive structures into a more complex one. Equilibrium can be restored once a new scheme is added to accommodate new information. Only variations are in timing between cultures. Intellectual disability would go through same stages, just slower. Has substages, and the transitions between them are gradual. The behavior is initially unintentional, discovered by chance. Ex: suck thumb, feels good, keeps doing it.
