Charles sherrington and cajal are recognized as the main founders of neuroscience. Italian investigator camillo golgi found a way to stain nerve cells with silver salts. Enabled researchers to examine the structure of a single cell. Cajal used goldgi method but applied to infant brain (cells smaller and easier to examine on a single slide) Research should that nerve cells remain separate instead of merging together. Neurons are like rest of cells in body. Membrane: surface of the cell, structure that separates the inside of the cell from the outside environment.
