Ps101- lecture 10- sleep, dreams, and psychoactive drugs. Sleep allows recovery from physical and mental fatigue. Higher in young people, starts to drop off around 30 which is the main cause of wrinkles. Every species evolved a sleep-wake pattern that increased chances of survival in their environments. It is safer to be tucked away/hidden at night for humans and productive during the day. Sexual and aggressive drives can be fulfilled in dreams because inhibition is gone. Women tend to dream equally about men and women. Men dream about of the time men because they tend to have more conflict with men. Dream and waking thoughts are produced by the same systems in the brain. Rapid shifts of content in dreams are more similar to wakefulness than we realize. Dreams are merely byproducts of brain activity in certain areas. Brain synthesizes best-fit story for parts of the brain that are active on a given night.
