Ps 101 b2: general psychology lecture 6: thinking and intelligence. Thinking is mental manipulations of these representations. Symbolic representations don"t correspond to to physical features--like words. We think california is because we think of california on the coast as farthest. West, but actually reno nevada is farther west. This is a way of making thinking more efficient. Category that is characterized by a list of features and all members in this category are equal. Example: bachelor is an unmarried male, so if someone is unmarried and male then he is a bachelor. But, this means that a 16 year old boy who is unmarried is equal to a 30 year old man who is dating, but unmarried. This is the trap of defining attribute model. Example: chair--has a back, usually legs, for one person. Within each category, we have a best example (or prototype)
