Document Summary
Personality defines a person"s distinctive patterns of feelings, thoughts, and actions. Trait defines a person"s general action tendencies. Surface traits are obvious and grouped such as your dorm room. Source traits are at the core of personality. Genetic concordance is strong for the big five : genetics > rearing. They had strong correlation regardless of whether twins raised together or apart. Stronger correlation is found in identical twins than in fraternal twins. Indeed, zero correlation was found between adopted children and their adoptive siblings. Studies of national character suggest some differences in personality. In fact, neuroticism more prevalent in northeast us. Ego tries to reconcile id-derived needs with supergo-derived actualities of the world. Superego represents internalized rule of parents and punishes deviations through feelings of guilt. Internal conflict causes anxiety, which leads to repression. Repression materials may surface again, demanding the use of defense mechanisms: Displacement directing the conflict to someone else. Reaction formation substituting the emotion with its opposite.
