CAS BI 107 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Thermodynamics, Haloalkane, Bromine
Document Summary
Restrictive, due to water temperature, salinity and food supply. Oceans can be divided into distinct life zones by water depth and light penetration. Survival mechanisms in aphotic (without light) zones: Flesh of the blobfish: gelatinous mass, density is slightly less than water so it can float above the seafloor without expending energy on swimming. Reproduction of the anglerfish: males, significantly smaller than females, will bite into the skin of a female in which their tissues will fuse and form continuous blood vessels. With the male no longer needing to hunt for his own food, his organisms and eyes degenerate, only leaving behind the testes as a source of sperm. A female can carry up to six males; thus, ensuring a constant supply of sperm for reproduction. Includes all of the organisms as well as the physical and chemical factors that influence the organisms -- biotic and abiotic components.
