CAS BI 106 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Buffy Coat, Blood Plasma, Fluid Compartments
Document Summary
Vocab: heme/hema pertaining to blood, antigen a protein or molecule that elicits a response, antibody a protei(cid:374) that your (cid:271)ody (cid:373)akes to (cid:862)atta(cid:272)k(cid:863) a (cid:272)ertai(cid:374) a(cid:374)tige(cid:374). Intracellular fluid fluid within a cell: extracellular fluid surrounds a cell. Blood: we talk about blood in terms of the whole tissue (whole blood) or its parts, erythrocytes (red blood cells; rbc) (think r=rbc, buffy coat (white blood cells leukocytes; wbcs and platelets) middle dense (think: Buff people fight = wbc fights: plasma least dense, whole blood plasma = formed elements (cells and cellular material) most dense. Functions of blood: transportation blood transport oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, waste and hormones, regulation blood regulates the body temperature by carrying heat. Blood also helps regulate the ph of the body (acidic vs. basic), and regulates fluid balance throughout the body: protection the leukocytes in the blood protect the body against infection. There are also antibodies in the blood that protect us.
