Document Summary
Functions of the respiratory system: gas exchange, gas conditioning (warming the air and removing particles and pathogens, sound production, olfaction, defense. Gross anatomy: two anatomical tracts, upper respiratory tract (sinuses, nose, nasal cavity, and pharynx, lower respiratory tract (larynx, trachea, bronchi and lungs, two functional portions, the conducting portion (transportation of air, respiratory portion (gas exchange) Irritation to the epithelium by inhaled stuff or friction causes the mucous production rate to increase. The nasal cavity: nasal cavity- nasal conchae (superior, middle, and inferior, nasal vestibule, nostril, cribriform plate of ethmoid bone, posterior nasal aperture.
