Document Summary
Diastole is when the heart tissue is supplied from the coronary circulation. Diastole- relaxation and filling up with blood. Progressive hardening and blocking of the arteries. As we age, we lose elasticity in heart and blood vessels and skin. Arteries are blocked by plaques that develop. Cholesterol is sticky and there is hardened plaque on the wall. This becomes a feature of the blood vessels. Linked to diet and how much cholesterol we take in. Stents- metal bridges that help with blood flow. Clot completely blocks and needs to dissolve in order to resume blood flow. Cardiac muscles are individual but connected by gap junctions. Cytoplasm is linked: small ions can flow through. Nutrients can diffuse through and ions can diffuse through. Coordinated push volume change that ejects blood. Would continue to beat without input from brain. Guiding number of beats up or down (brain) Will continue to contract even without input from brain.
