Document Summary

The heart is a pump at the center of 2 intertwining circulatory systems. The only sites of exchange are at the capilaries. Mediastinum- cage for the heart and arteries and heart are in there. Ct- serous membranes- double walled and fold in on itself and surround the organs with serous fluid between the two membranes. Fat around the heart for thermoregulation and heat. Posteriorsuperior region is flat and is called a base. Comes to a point known as the apex. Function: prevents overflow & restrict heart movement within thorax. Heart is contained within a fibrous sac called the pericardium. Chambers fill with blood and then the volume of blood stretches it. * volume limit as to how much can fill. Each atrium has an anterior flap-like extension called an auricle (looks like an ear) Coronary sulcus- separates (just a little divet) the atria from the ventricles. Blood vessels are in the grooves of the sulcus.
