9/19-9/21: Cells
What is a cell?
You are - 50-75 trillion of your own human cells
100 trillion bacteria and fungal cells
Cells
The smallest unit of life that can function independently (functional unit)
Contains the genetic information for the entire organism
Composed of molecules
Can make new macromolecules
Can reproduce itself
It has some degree of organization to its contents
Different cells can vary in levels of organization
Varies in size
Contain DNA
Can utilize energy and make new macromolecules
Central division: a presence of a nucleus
Nucleus: a membrane sack to hold DNA
All cells have a membrane
The plasma membrane surrounds all cells and their cytoplasms
Almost all cells live in a watery environment (aqueous)
BUT all cells have an aqueous interior
Must create a barrier for autonomy
Barrier for all cells is a phospholipid bilayer
Eukaryotic vs. Prokaryotic (Bacterial)
Eu = true
Eukaryotic cells have a true nucleus
All DNA is housed within the nucleus
Pro = no
Prokaryotic cells have no nucleus
All DNA is gathered in a clump in the center of the cell
Cell Walls
Eukaryotic (animal) cells lack walls, making antibiotics that attack cells walls safe for eukaryotic
cells (ex: Penicillin)
Ribosomes
Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic ribosomes are molecularly different
Eukaryotic cells can utilize sugars for energy much more efficiently than Prokaryotic cells
Eukaryotic Cells
two groups: animal vs. plant cells
Animal Cells
Stores the genetic information (DNA) as threads of chromatin
Surrounded by its own membrane
During cell division chromatin condenses into chromosomes
Chroma (prefix) - Color
Some/Soma (prefix) - Body
Prokaryotic Cells
Unicellular organisms
Smaller than eukaryotic cells
Contain NO membrane-bound organelles (no nucleus)
DNA gathers in the center of cell
