Fell asleep in lecture, get notes from someone. Discussion: states, every person has a certain job. From bands we went to tribes, then chiefdom, and then a state. Increasing complexity, not saying one is better than the other: what is a city, group of ppl in one place who agree that they"re a city. You need centrality and specialization: why would we go from small societies to specialized big cities, someone wants power, people made cities because of religion. Same belief brought people together in one place: ancestor worship and belief that your ancestor lived there, common enemy or threat beings people together for safety reasons, economic opportunities, diverse functions and activates that a city provides. Lord elgin and the parthenon marbles: parthenon, we"re looking at the acropolis in athens, greece with the most prominent temple being the parthenon, pericles takes on a huge building program in athens.
