Needle is inserted in subarachnoid space (csf: can be used to check fluid for blood and other substances, can inject dies, bend over to spread vertebrae apart (fetal position) (spread spinal processes apart) Gray matter (butterfly: unmyelinated axons, soma, dendrites, neuroglia. Central canal: continuous with ventricles of brain. Conduct sensory and motor information: tracts: bundles of axons inside the cns, ascending tracts: up. Sensory axons that conduct impulses from periphery to brain: descending tracts: down. Motor axons that conduct impulses from brain to muscles and glands. Serve as a reflex center: reflex a quick, involuntary, response to a stimulus that passes along a reflex arc (5 components) Detect stimuli and converts it to electrical signal. Carries electrical signals to cns (spinal cord) Nerve: a bundle of axons outside of the cns. Spinal nerves have two points of attachment: posterior (dorsal) root sensory, anterior (ventral) root motor.
