SOC 100A Lecture 10: March 2nd Notes
Document Summary
Oucastes/ untouchables (each divided into many jati) Class derived from economic system, a relation in the sense that you cannot have bosses w/o employees. Like how you have lords only if you have serfs or masters if there are slaves. Cannot have one class w/o another, primarily a relational measure. All workers experience class formation in the same way. Some ppl have property and some are excluded from having property. The two are seen as antagonistic to each other, their interests go against each other. Only two ways for power to be distributed: class: organized by the market, status: determined by honour/prestige. Could be divided based on religion etc, positive esteem and negative esteem. Only difference: access to goods and services are obtained by market relations or non-market relations. Once again property or no property is the way to determine social stratification.
