Education broadly refers to the social processes and institutions involved in shaping, creating, transmitting and constraining, what a society regards as the knowledge and skills its citizens need to learn. Pre-colonial indigenous education took place within the context of kin and communal life. Schools were founded by churches in 1820"s. State aid withdrawn 1870"s - 90"s ( free, compulsory and secular schooling). 1960"s state funding to church schools resumed. 1982 federal funding of private schools exceeds funding for state schools and increases doing so. 70% of private school funding covered by fed. Gov"t but only 30% of children in this sector. There is a growing divide between the rich and poor in terms of educational achievement in australia, which accelerated between 2000-2012. However, between 2000 and 2012 there has been a substantial dive in australia"s performance outcomes from averaging around 3rd or 4th on most measures to now ranking. 19th in maths; 13th in reading and 16th in science.
