SOC 100A Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Mao Zedong, Main Source, Social Inequality
Document Summary
Political sociology is a sub-discipline concerned with the study of power in its broadest sense. Sociology is not alone in the study of power. It shares this concern with other social science disciplines, especially politics and economics. It is inherently a interdisciplinary area of study. It is also an essential ingredient in understanding social inequality and change. Power resides where men [sic] believe it resides, it"s a trick, a shadow on the wall, and a very small man can cast a very large shadow (lord varys in game of thrones). Power grows out of the barrel of a gun mao zedong (1938) Karl marx saw power as deriving from the ownership/control of a society"s productive economic resources. Power is the probability that one actor within a relationship will be in a position to carry out his [/her/their] will despite resistance and regardless of the basis on which this probability rests (weber 1978: 53)
