Document Summary

): structure and function of cells of the nervous system. Cells of the nervous system: neurons, supporting cells. Glia- make up half of the brain volume- responsible for structural support for neurons. Cleansing neurons also play a role in production/breakdown of neural transmitters. Ex. glutamate: the blood-brain barrier- many substances cannot cross from the bloodstream into the brain. Exceptions- puking center if you eat food that is spoiled/rotten, it allows certain things into the brain causing you to regurgitate your meal. Imbalance created by ionic concentrations (k, na, cl, ca)- can be negative/positive. Electrical forces try to make everything equal inside and out. Resting negative potential (-71 mv) of a neuron attracts na and repels cl. Action potential conduction of the action potential all or nothing (fires or doesn"t fire) Autoreceptors- located in the membranes of presynaptic cells- negative feedback loop in signal transduction- let cell know it has truly fired/prevent cell from firing again.
