Document Summary

Aphasia: impairment of language usually caused by left hemisphere damage either to broca"s area (impairing speaking) or wernicke"s area (impairing understanding). Some people can speak fluently but cant read (despite good vision) while others can comprehend what they read but not speak. Other wirse but not read, read but not write, read numbers but not letters, sing but not speak. Cases suggest that language is complex and brain areas must serve different language functions. Broca"s area: damage to this area in left frontal lobe. With damage to this are, people struggle to speak words but sing familiar songs and comprehend speech. Wernicke"s area: damage to this area in left temporal lobe meant people could speak only meaningless words. It is involved in language comprehension and expression; usually left temporal lobe. There is brain activity in this area during processing. We know that broca"s area processes lang through series of neural computations.
