Document Summary

4 physical development in infants and toddlers. By second year, babies tend to slim down and usually continues into middle childhood. Girls are slightly shorter and lighter than boys and have a higher ratio of fat to muscle. Cephalocaudal trend: head to tail head develops more rapidly than other parts of the body. Proximodistal trend: near to far from center of the body outward (head, chest, trunk, then arms legs, then hands and feet). Largest brain structure, containing most of neurons and synapses. Once neurons are in place, they rapidly form synapses. Programmed cell death: makes space for neural fibers and synapses. Frontal lobes has the longest period of development. Prefrontal cortex is responsible for thought: consciousness, impulses, integration of info, memory, reasoning, planning and problem-solving. Left hemisphere of brain is largely responsible for verbal abilities (speaking / writing) and positive emotion. Right hemisphere handles spatial abilities and negative emotion.
