Normal distribution- symmetric bell shaped curve that represents the pattern in which many characteristics are dispersed in the population. Iq tests: modern iq scores display how you do in terms of others. Iq tests are reliable, consistent scoring (sd of 15: although they"re reliable, they"re not always valid because their sample behavior may not be representative of the population, the correlation between academic success and iq scores is fairly low. Iq tests only test verbal intelligence (articulation, literary comprehension) Using an iq test for a culture other than the one it was originally designed for will be problematic. Different cultural groups will value different intellectual skills. Intellectual disability: mental retardation- subnormal mental ability, usually characterized by an iq score of. 70 or below and inability to perform everyday tasks. Have to originate before age 18: vast majority of people that are diagnosed fall into the category known as mild retardation, 50-70% Iq tests can be used in various ways.
