Acceptable - direct lobbying = The interest group and its lobbyists approach
government officials personally to press their case and to influence
legislation and government policy. This is allowed as long as the Federal
Regulation of Lobbying Act of 1946 is followed, which is a law requiring
groups and individuals seeking to influence legislation t o register with the
secretary of the Senate and the clerk of the House of Representatives.
Unacceptable - A type of corruption in which people use their connections with
government officials to gain favors or preferential treatment for a third
party, usually in return for money or gifts. In the USA, gifts to serving
politicians are severely regulated. The Obama administration prohibits
federal workers from receiving gifts from lobbyists - even to be taken to
lunch. If taken out, they must pay for their own food!
● Example: In 2006, Jack Abramoff provided public officials with gifts in
exchange for the support of legislation that favored his clients’ desire to have
laws restricting Indian casinos repealed. The gifts included trips to Scotland,
campaign contributions, meals at Abramoff’s restaurant, and tickets to
entertainment events.
