Not mutual at first, but she grows fond of him, and maybe comes to love him in a deeper, real form of love, but the story is not about courtly love, which has to exist in a vacuum. Has autonomy but is still restricted by society. Outside, life is complicated if she does not have a male figurehead to protect her=yvaine, made a widow by yvaine. Lower than laidine, but not an idiotic sidekick, she is clever, charming and polite, has brains. We don"t know why she does what she does, motive unclear.
