Document Summary

Lecture 1 cells of the nervous system. Three types of neurons: motor neurons: movement, sensory neurons: detection, interneurons: interconnects other neurons. In the cns, sensory neurons synapse with motor neurons. Purpose is to maintain the length of the quads. Patting the tendon stretches and causes contraction of the muscles: sensory neuron detects stretch in muscle tendon, simple circuit tells motor neuron in muscle to contract. Presynaptic neurons usually release the neurotransmitter chemical into a space between the neurons (synaptic cleft) and the neurotransmitter binds to the receptor on the postsynaptic cell and activates it. In simpler terms, it essentially give off the signal. Postsynaptic neurons are typically motor neurons, particularly in the case of the knee jerk reflex. It is activated by neurotransmitters given off by the presynaptic neurons. Inputs and signals from other neurons are received on dendrites and sent away on axons. Axon: location where electrical signals are sent away.
