Document Summary

Overview: overall energy production, general points on mitochondria, cell death, disease states, atp production. End product pyruvic acid: substrate phosphorylation. Uses a substrate to phosphorylate adp and atp: krebbs cycle. As a result if you look at potassium and sodium there is a resulting gradient due to the pump. This gradient becomes important becasue it works through a symport system. Sglt (sodium-dependent glucose transport) sodium goes down in its gradient but it gets pumped back. Glucose first gets phosphorylated, can"t go back across the membrane. Sets it up in its initial reaction of glycolysis. End product: pyruvic acid, can go several places: mitochondria or get converted into ethanol. Glycolysis in normal cells: not too much atp and nadh (high energy molecule). Takes a substrate and phosphorylates adp to atp. Goes in as accoa and has three options : 1. Oxidative phosphorylation ~ mitochondria, 30+ atp, o2 required, chemiosmotic hypothesis. General points: 1950 purified centrifuges, location.
