BIOL 251 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Sense Strand, Nucleic Acid Double Helix, Nitrogenous Base
Document Summary
The fit of a ligand into the active site depends on match between shapes and charges. You can alter a protein"s function by altering its shape. This is a major way in which activity is regulated. Allosteric modulation- modulator binds to the regulatory and changes active site so ligand can fit. Need the modulator, it can go in and out. The higher the concentration of the modulator, the greater the chance of binding. Covalent modulation- modulator binds covalently to protein. Phosphate shares electrons, enzymes are used, the protein changes shape. Phosphate comes from atp, kinase removes phosphate through phosphorylation. Sugar is ribose in rna and deoxyribose in dna. Dna is in the nucleus of a cell. Sense strand- order of bases gives info on protein synthesis. Triplet code- 3 bases code for 1 amino acid. Coiled around histones, needs to be unwound and separated to use sense strand to make rna. Messenger rna (with codons)- transcription of dna code.
