PSYC 3300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Nigrostriatal Pathway, Striatum, Corticospinal Tract
Document Summary
The motor cortex: primary motor cortex, premotor cortex. Supplementary motor area (sma: all contain a somatotopic map of the body, greater amount of cortical space devoted to areas required finer movements. Other brain areas: other areas involved in the planning and execution of movements, somatosensory cortex, posterior parietal cortex, basal ganglia, cerebellum, prefrontal cortex. Signals lead to the initiation of planned movements. Posterior parietal cortex: one of the first areas involved in planning a movement, monitors the position of the body relative to the environment, receives and combines sensory information, visual, auditory, proprioception. Involved with the initial intention to make a movement: becomes active as soon as a movement is required, complies required sensory information. The prefrontal cortex: plans actions based on consequences, receives information about the identity of perceived objects from ventral visual stream. Integrates sensory information with information about the body: from posterior parietal cortex, maintains this information and uses it to select appropriate actions.
