Racial ideas consciously conducted and disseminated--if not always accepted w/o challenge--n r tied to structural developments. Race-making the incessant work of creating racial cateogories, living w/ n within them, altering them, n even obliterating them when they no longer have social or political utility. Africans americans were jsutipose from asians to justify cutting of welfare. People of color can achieve success if they aren"t protesting. This ideas distract ppl about the circumstances n system under which these r and which position them in the place that they are at. Vietnamese americans were seen as independent and self efficient while blacks were seen as dependent. Surge in asian immigration beginning in the 1970s. About 60% asians r born outside of us. Idea that while a model minority, asians r forever foreigners. Espiritu: these 2 stereotypes r lined in that in both cases asians r seen as easily exploitable n therefore employers like to hire them.
