Document Summary

Memo two due oct 20th in class. What are the causes and consequences of gender inequality. How does modern society influence gender and sexual identities. Key concepts : social construction, gender socialization, institutional sexism, intersectionalities of different identities, gender and education. Empirical evidence exists that show there is gender and sexual inequality. Discussions of gender assume natural or biological basis for differences. Gender is a social construction: it is a concept, role, identity, and set of behaviors that manifest and have been formed by society is response to the needs of society and what society thinks are best practices. We accept this because efforts to identify physiological origins for gender differences are inconclusive > hard to link complex social behaviors to specific behavioral forces. Differences within gender are as great as than differences between gender. Room to accept the fact that there is a myriad of experience.
