Document Summary

Background: communist, marxist, fight against fascism (think it is false liberation) Interested in mechanical reproduction at the turn of the 20th century. Reproduction possible in 1900s but put in use in 1930s. Two potentials of mechanical reproduction (1) reproduction of all known works of art. This reproduction jeopardizes the weight derived from tradition, destabilizes authority of work, eliminates authenticity because it becomes shared and common. Aura = strange tissue of space and time: the unique apparition (ghostly presence) of a distance, however near that may be (272) Ex. concert with dry ice fog vs. artist who sings right in front of audience. Ex. looking at a portrait in museum; kept mystified because you are close but not right in front of the painting, distance kept by the bars. Aura has a veil - things are close at the same time it is not apprehendable, keep us in a place where we are subordinated (authority, authenticity, aura as synonyms are mystified)
