Document Summary

There is something in the psychic life of the subject that he/ she is not aware of. Do delusions have some element of truth? (do not just dismiss delusions) Consciousness - awareness of present state of feelings and memories. Unconscious - desires, motivations, emotions etc are active even though we are. Preconscious - all data available in conscious when reminded not aware of them. An archive of ideas/ feelings/ memories/ trauma/ pain still operating. Must understand this as a force that can; we do not see it or have direct under the surface of the conscious access, can only see its effects (through dreams/ delusions) If subject is self aware, there are other unknown effects that affect/ resist/ trouble the subject. Psyche is site of excess (exceeds the subject) Therefore, subject is not fully within itself. Norbert"s motivation to go to italy - unconscious.
