Document Summary
Different models looking at substance use disorder. Social deviance model - what are the societal norms for given drugs based on different cultures. Substance use disorder is typically externalizing behavior, covert form of antisocial behavior. Could be overt if you are holding up someone to get money to purchase drugs, etc. Also could stem from internalizing roots like low self-esteem, anxiety, or depression. 3 paths to substance use disorder equifinality (not only one pathway that leads to problematic substance use) Life course persistent early onset group who are comorbid adhd, peer rejection, all those risk factors that lead to conduct problems and substance abuse is part of heterotypic trajectory. Later onset who are comorbid with covert antisocial behavior - in teen years engage in covert antisocial activity. Exclusive substance use problems who didn"t seem to be early starters for antisocial behavior, no covert problems, in mid-teens, turning to drugs to cope/self-medicate.
