Cognitive development occurs through gradual and continual growth, not quick shifts. Instead of being in diff. stages, we progress in a way that creates varied levels of capability to learning new concepts. Zpd"s: areas where where learner can accomplish a cognitive task with guidance. Scaffolding: the process of teaching slightly above the current level of cognitive development in order to help the learner better understand a cognitive concept. Natural in language (talking to 2-3 yr old example) Voice changes (higher pitch, accentuate vowels, slow down speech for kids) Examine the interaction bt. the social environment and the human mind/behavior from a number of different angles: impact of env. on person, person on environment, interaction bt. groups and individuals in the social world. Relationships explored in a number of ways: behaviors, cognitions, emotions.
