He encourages the us to build up a cohesive western bloc. Churchill gives his iron curtain speech warning of spread of communism. Various disagreements keep solidifying the impossibility of cooperation. Britain had been protecting the mediterranean, the us has to decide between: Replace britain (by providing security for greece & turkey) Us population are still pretty isolationist: truman has to scare them. Instead of discussing the balance of power, he talked about protecting free people everywhere. Truman doctrine: send money, equipment or military force to states threatened by communism. June 1947: marshall plan: economic aid to europe. Stalin doesn"t want all the old currency flowing into eastern europe would be destabilising.
