Document Summary

International relations between nations can"t be studies in isolation! Ngos (that act internationally), mncs, international organisations, individuals, states are all factors. State: a unit of political organisation with 3 essential characteristics. Sole possesor of the legitimate right to use violence within its borders ex: kurds are a nation, but don"t have a state. Decided that church was not above the states. Nation: a group of people sharing a history, culture, and maybe a language or tradition. 1648: end of the 30 years" war treaty of westphalia. Independent & legally equal states in western europe. Rulers would decide their state"s rules or religion. After 1648: growth of militaries leads to taxation. States aren"t the only way for the world to be organised. A system is made up of a set of interacting units that act with some visible patterns. Looking at one unit will not help understand the outcome of the system!
