De gaulle and us: manuveuring w/i the constraints of the cold war: de gaulle as critic. Us had favored vichy over the resistance, support de gaulle"s rivals, kept in the dark about allied military plans, yalta settlement that forced france into a subordinate position within the western bloc. So, de gaulle distanced france from us in two military areas: independent nuclear deterrent force de frappe, withdrawal from nato integrated demand, expel nato from french soil. Some were legitimate grievances and critiques: wwii experience, doctrine of graduated response, us favoritism toward britain special relationship , failed/mistaken us policies like vietnam, persistent trade deficits, de gaulle as ally. De gaulle never fundamentally broke with us: kept france in nato alliance, if not integrated military command, criticized su oppression in prague, loyal ally in crisis: berlin blockade, cuban missile crisis, quest for autonomy and influence.
