Direct democracy faithfully represent the masses in politics & unmediated relationship between the citizen and the state. Secularism in public life, esp. in public schools. Exporting french values such as democracy & rights of men. Chronic instability constant regime change: 9 different political systems in 19c and constantly blew up the constitution. Political violence: coup d"etat, military defeats: nazi germany 1940, 1870 franco prussian war. How french revolution led to difficult politics in 19c 2 legacies to political instability: undemocratic peasantry. A nation of peasants: legacies of the revolution gave peasant title to secure land, no feudal. These peasants were undemocratic: mostly local priests, some supported the napoleonic line taxes became land of peasant farmers because land secured, distrusted democracy. Problem for republicans: paradox of democratic movement until they won over the peasant votes (peasant didn"t know of their interests: deep internal divisions among anti-democrats. -before absolutist, divine-right monarchies or constitutional monarchies with elected parliament.
