Revolution was not over when red army marched on beijing. Temporary period of continuation of bourgeois democratic regime. Too difficult to make a sudden transition. 1957-66 : period of experimentation with leadership of the masses. To mobilise mass support for projects of national construction & destruction of opponents. Greater vision that people will want to break through to utopia . Hunting, gathering, feudalism, socialism and then communist utopia. New democracy lasted much shorter than anticipated. Weakest link in the capitalist world was undeveloped countries. Class struggle (ie. contradictions in society won"t be resolved until world revolution was attained) was key link . Equality must be achieved before thinking about improving living standards. Requires state appropriation of all property to level it. Rural industrialisation to equality city & countryside. Mao decided to discard it: china would take up its own model with continuous mass mobilisation. Must focus on different contradictions one task at a time: socialisation of means of production.
