PHILOS 25B Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Natura Naturans, Scholia, Natura Naturata
Document Summary
Dependence of modes on god, and god as nature. Recap: we showed spinoza"s proof for monism, now we know: There is only one substance (god) with a variety of attributes. These attributes include thought and extension, but there are an infinite number of others. Everything is ontologically and conceptually dependent on god: everything is a mode of god (corollary to p25) Concepts in descartes vs. spinoza: god, objects and minds. For spinoza, these are modes: features/modifications of bodies and minds. For spinoza, these are affections: another way of explaining this: Descartes: infinite substance = god, finite substances = objects, minds, modes = features/modifications of finite substances (e. g. color, size, ideas, etc. ) Spinoza: substance = god, modes = objects/minds, features/modifications of modes = affections. E. g. a mind is a mode of god conceived under the attribute of thought. A table is a mode of god conceived under the attribute of extension.
