These hunting & fighting pilgrimages were called going to buffalo . As u. s. government expanded into american west in 18502, it encountered these migrations while attempting to create a new political & legal order. Treaties were created to ensure experienced dramatic & disrupting changes. Gold was discovered in idaho & montana. Gold seekers, speculators, freighters, merchants & stockmen flooded valleys, gulches & creeks near continental divide. Montana"s gold rushes & spotty settlement didn"t lead directly to organized war with indian inhabitants. Confrontations, small-scale hostilities & stock theft became common. Tribes complained bitterly about increasing tide of encroachments, dwindling game populations & ever-recurring epidemics. Common hunting group south of missouri river, established by 1855 steven treaties, witnessed frenzied boomtowns & floating populations looking for next strike.
