Yurok tribal fisheries program, final report, the klamath river fish kill of. - michael belchik, dave hillemeier & ronnie m. pierce. Reports of dead & dying fish in lower klamath river. Received by yurok tribal fisheries program (ytfp) Occurred during summer salmon run in 2002. Ich: a ciliate protozoan parasite found throughout the world. Outbreaks occur when conditions are favorable for rapid multiplication of parasite, like warm water, high fish densities & stressed fish. Trophozoite: adult phase of this parasite; resides and feeds on skin and gills of infected fish. Cannot survive in saltwater -- infection could only begin after fish entered freshwater. Columnaris: common throughout the world & still present at all times in aquatic environment. Not a problem unless water temperatures are higher than optimal. Overcrowding of fish can also start problems with columnaris. 2002 fall chinook run entered river from ocean for its upstream migration.
