Ough is a well-known problem in english spelling: enough [ f], cough [ f], through [u], though [o]: general articulatory phonetics: in this class we will be concerned only with articulatory phonetics. We will first discuss consonants, then vowels with a focus on english, although occasionally a sound will be discussed that is not found in english. Consonants are sounds produced by partially or completely blocking the air in its passage from the lungs through the vocal tract (at least for pulmonic egressive sounds). Consonants are classified according to the following four criteria: (i) the state of the glottis : what are the vocal cords doing? (ii) place of articulation (iii) manner of articulation : how is the sound made? (iv) nasality. : where is the sound made (upper articulator/lower articulator) is the velum raised (= oral sound) or lowered (= nasal sound) In the larynx are two muscular folds called vocal cords .
