L & S C30Y Lecture 14: Lecture 14
Document Summary
Gmo vegetables are no more dangerous than their non-gmo counterparts: collective delusion is not new. What is the connection between bacterial immunity (how bacteria defend themselves against their own infections) and a treatment for. Certain strains of bacteria cannot be killed by phage even though those phage can kill other kinds of bacteria. Inside those bacteria, there is a weapon to kill those phage: scientists find out that the restriction is a set of molecular scissors, waiting for the phage to inject the dna into the bacteria. The scissors cut the incoming dna, literally shred it to species. Because of dna methylation: these molecular machines don"t shred incoming dna randomly. They recognize a specific dna sequence: cuts the sequence gaattc, this bacterial weapon can be completely repurposed. This gives scientists the ability to fragment a piece of dna into defining fragments, literally separate it and study those isolated fragments.
