ITALIAN R5B Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Camillo Boito, Scapigliatura, Italian Unification
#22 3/12 Monday
Important Terms/Tropes
● Risorgimento
● Scapigliatura
● The Macabre
● Positivism / Materialism
● The “Mad Scientist” Trope
Two Major Questions for the Week
1. How does the text explore the relationship between Art and Science? Does Boito (or do
specific characters) seem to be arguing that they are opposite pursuits? That they are
similar? Etc.
2. How do the numerous extra-textual references (nymphs, Renaissance artists, ancient
Greek writers, statues of Venus, Prometheus, etc.) contribute to the narrative?
For Wednesday
● Read Camillo Boito, “A Body,” pp. 69-84 (in course reader)
● Complete Close Reading HW Activity
● Select one of our two major topics for “A Body” (Allusions or Art/Science)
● Find a relevant passage (max. 4-6 sentences)
● Do a free-write/close reading hybrid: write approx. 300 words in which you
consider both the literal content of your passage and its “micro” details in the
service of addressing your chosen topic
