Study of geographical features at particular times in the geological past. Part of where they live today relates to the past. Process of animals expanding or changing their range. Animals can move from one region to another freely. Pattern of dispersal where there is some kind of ecological filter that lets some animals through, but not others i. e. climate/temperature barriers lets some animals extend their range but not others. Have constraints that pit animals against each other. If animals from mainland survive and are successful, may hop along island chain. Loss of diversity so new species arise quickly. Happen when animals disperse over large bodies of water i. e. south american monkeys- however, monkeys originated in africa. Monkeys appeared in south america when sa was an island; since there was no land connection, monkeys either crossed the ocean from africa or crossed ocean from north america. Survivor probability increases if animal is amphibious and smaller.
