Document Summary
Michael sherraden professor of social work at u washington. Income based policies won"t make a real change unless we change who holds wealth. Captured the zeitgeist of the polity and policy matters. On the right disillusionment with the war on poverty, belief in welfare dependency, emphasis on private v public sector in delivery of services. Left - disillusionment with the effectiveness of social policies, passion for equity/distribution the idea that ownership matters. Argues that income supports miss key axis of inequality- that"s it"s wealth and savings, not income, that shapes opportunity in this country. Black wealth/white wealth: a new perspective on racial inequality. This shakes the national narrative and gives way into asset building. Assets are things a person owns that have value and can be exchanged in a marketplace (they have value) It is something that you can trade. Cash, savings, a pension or retirement account, etc.
