BIOLOGY 1B Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Tidal Power, Epiphyte, Kelp Forest
Document Summary
Biosphere - distinguished from the lithosphere, atmosphere(air) and hydrosphere. Biogeography : the study of the relationship between organismal distribution and environmental factors across large areas. Humboldt"s work marks the foundation of biogeography. As he ascended, he also noted the distribution of plant species across the mountain, from base to above treeline. 200 years later, scientists returned to chimborazo to map the distribution of plant species and relied on humboldt"s work for comparison. Shows that plants have extended their range mostly upslope as a result of global climate change, lower ranges are also higher. Physiognomy : according to humboldt the macroscopic perspective, where you see the landscape as a whole (ex: you see the forest, animals, plants, and topographic features like rocks, not just trees) is the "physiognomy" of a landscape. Wallace"s zoogeographic divisions of the terrestrial world form the basis for categorizations of the major biogeographic realms today.
