Document Summary

An ecological community is a set of species that live in sympatry and interact. By definition, a community includes all of the species in a local area. In practice, however, no single investigator no single team of investigators can study all of the species in a local area, there are simply too many. So, community studies are generally focused on a subset of the whole, for example the plant community, or the spider community, and these are accepted uses of the term community in ecology. Species respond to the environment based on the adaptations and actions of their constituent individuals, so hard to define the boundaries. Disjunct abiotic factors create discrete biotic boundaries in community composition, such as at the edge of forest, or in the transition from a lake to a grassland. In such cases, community boundaries are relatively clear. An ecotone is an interface community that exists between two distinct, adjacent communities.
