ASTRON 10 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Galilean Moons, Sea Ice, Solar Wind
Document Summary
Can be on top of anything with a cold surface. Includes ammonia, carbon dioxide, methane, and water ices. Surface of antarctica is where the largest quantity of ice is found on earth. 99% of the surface of antarctica is covered with ice. Sea ice can trace currents and winds. Last one peaked around 12000 years ago. Many rivers formed at the extent ice sheets reached. Many theories to their formation, no consensus. Next to pingos are head and tail valleys. If they were found on mars rather than the moon, would be evidence of permafrost. Bigger reservoir of ice than the moon. Astronomers identified the ice caps on mars hundreds of years before exploring. Core of the ice caps is water ice, covered by a layer of thin co2 ice. Terracing found at the edge of glaciers, like on earth. Brine (very salty water) can and does flow on mars.
