Mainly undocumented collecting(called looting today), not systematically collected or recorded. *heinrich schliemann, a 19th century german businessman, fascinated with the history of the trojan wars, as written down in the iliad by homer, a classical greek author from the ionian coast. There was a 10 yr siege by king agamemnon and achilles the greek. Schliemann set out to find troy on the ionian coast of turkey at hissarlik, based on. Englishman frank calvert"s earlier visits and the iliad story/myth. He was following the oral epic poem, written down hundreds of years after the event, 2000 years earlier and guessing where this place was. He proposed where the battles were, the city gate, and that they uncovered helen of troy"s jewels. After finding them, schliemann smuggled this gold and other things out of the country, against the turkish authorities wishes, trying to protect them . Priam"s treasure taken to germany, and the pergamon museum in berlin.
