HON 1520 Lecture 2: Greece and Rome Videos
Document Summary
Greece is the cornerstone of western civilization. Chasm/void uranus, gaea, erebus, (eros) titans gods humans. Prometheus took pity on us: stole fire from olympus, punished, took us from chaos to civilization. Greece started in caves (alepotrypa): mythical gateway to hades, over 150 bodies exhumed. No river like the nile to help civilization flourish. Lots of mountains and oceans: tribal wars over scarce resources, average lifespan 29 years old. Cycladis people sculpted statues out of minerals their islands were at a crossroads and connected the mediterranean. Bronze age had the first global economy. Minoans took over many of the islands (crete). Minoans were hurt by a volcanic eruption, but an invasion wiped them out (mycenaeans). The greek culture always seems to carry through. The greeks we think of today (5th century) weren"t the only greeks. Greece"s collapse after the bronze age was real rough. You did what you had to do to survive with no help from a government.
